SCIENCE

 Mr. Herd

 2009-2010

  1. Upon entering the classroom, get your binder, textbook, pencil and paper, and any materials as stated on the board.
  2. Be in your seat when class begins.
  3. Listen to and follow directions the first time. If you don’t understand something, ask.
  4. Be respectful of others, they are here to learn.
  5. It is very disruptive to the entire class for you to be talking while I’m trying to instruct. Please do not shout out answers or shout to others in the room.  Raise your hand and wait to be recognized.
  6. NO food or drink allowed in my classroom. If I see you eating, it’s going in the trash.
  7. NO cell phones, i-pods, headsets etc. are allowed. Turn them off before entering the classroom. These items will automatically be confiscated and turned over to the Dean of Students for pickup after school.
  8. Attend to personal needs BEFORE coming into the classroom. Restroom passes will be given out only during emergencies and NO passes will be granted to go to the office, use the phone or talk to another teacher or an administrator.
  9. If you receive an assigned seat for discipline reasons, that will remain your seat for the remainder of the semester.

In Class Assignments

You are responsible for placing any handouts given during class in your folder. If you are in attendance and receive a copy, do not ask later for a duplicate copy of something that you failed to put in your folder. Periodically we will have quiz worksheets. Quizzes may be open notes; therefore it is necessary for your folder to be up-to-date with information. Tests are given at the end of each chapter.  They are not open notes/books.  Your notes and worksheets completed during the course of instruction will be your study notes for your tests – do not lose them.  You need to pay attention during class and complete in-class work that we do. Class work will earn you points for the day. These points cannot be made up if you are absent. This work will also help you on quizzes/tests. You may not use or look at anyone else’s folder during a quiz. You may not help another student during a quiz. Doing so will result in both of you receiving a “0” for that quiz. If you have a question or need something, raise your hand.

Credits

In order to receive a credit for this class the following must be met;

  1. you must complete any class work assigned
  2. your folder must be kept up-to-date and in proper order
  3. projects must be turned in on the day designated, late turn-ins will not be accepted

Make-up work

In class assignments are an integral part of your grade, so it is important that you are present in class to complete these. YOU are responsible for getting any work or handouts that were given during your absence. Please see me to obtain any work. Do not come to me at the end of the term asking for make-up work. I will not give any additional or previous work to you.

Tutoring

Tutoring is available free of charge on a limited basis. You need to see me to make arrangements for tutoring.

If you are having trouble with a specific area, you need to come in and see me, leave me a note or give the school secretary a note to put in my mailbox. Working together we will move you towards your goal of graduation.

Curriculum

Science - Lesson Plan               9/7 thru 9/10

Physical Science Text - Chapter 1 Section 4 pages 22- 25 “Presenting Scientific Data”

National Standards met: A-1, A-2, E-2, G-1

State Standards met: F.9-10.C, E.9-10.A

Objectives:

After completing the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Organize and analyze data using tables and graphs.
  • Identify the relationship between a manipulated variable and a responding variable.
  • Explain the importance of communicating data.
  • Discuss the process of peer review.

Activities:

Short section on presenting data (graphs). Spend enough time as necessary to illustrate different kinds and their purposes.  Begin finalizing chapter information and begin review for Chapter test next week.  Use videos, overheads and board work to illustrate points.  Point out the potential for using this information when developing their Science Fair projects.  Switch between silent reading and reading aloud in class from text, examining and explaining key concepts as we go.

Grades 11 & 12:

Life Sciences Benchmark A

Scientific Ways of Knowing Benchmark A

Indicators: LS 1, 2 SWK 1,2,3,& 7

Objectives:

After completing the lesson, students will be able to:

  • List the characteristics all living things share
  • Explain how scientists used controlled experiments to disprove the idea of spontaneous generation
  • Identify what living things need to survive

Activities:

Read material both aloud and quietly to themselves alone in class.  Use overheads to illustrate information.  Pass out worksheets for in class work to review and reinforce material covered in class.  Point out the potential for using this information when developing their Science Fair projects.
