Year in Review…
Glass City Academy is a charter school completing its sixth year in 2008-2009. While accepting all applicants, the school was designed to accommodate the needs of students ages 16-21 who have been unsuccessful in a traditional high school setting. These students are recognized by the State of Ohio as highly at risk of not completing high school. Glass City Academy’s mission, focused on the success of these students, resulted in recognition for the fifth year, for its Continuous Improvement ranking, and for meeting the federal AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) rating. As a Dropout Prevention and Recovery School, great attention has been given to designing a curriculum that meets State of Ohio requirements as well as offering challenging classes for all students.
New to the 2008-2009 curriculum were classes in Psychology, Financial Independence, and Anatomy and Physiology. Two new classes, Introduction to Forensic Science and Scientific Inquiry and Methods , have been added to next year’s course list. Student career goals play a major role in determining classes added to the curriculum.
Requirements for a Glass City Academy diploma include: a total of 24 credits, successful scores on all Ohio Graduation Tests, a college level Independent Study Research Project, 30 hours of community service, a Workforce Technology Credential, Science Research Project, and a final exit examination. Mentor teachers insure that student projects meet quality standards and are entirely student driven.
Completing graduation requirements this year, 38 students proudly accepted Glass City Academy diplomas on June 3, 2009.
The past year was filled with successes. Two graduates received scholarships, and again, 100% indicated plans to continue their educations in 2-year, 4-year, apprenticeship, or military training. Glass City Academy received the Community Builder Award from United Way. Very intensive efforts to purchase a new facility have continued throughout the year.
